Week Two: Literature and London

After two weeks of living in Liverpool, I finally feel 100% (okay, maybe 90%) adjusted to the culture, living arrangements, and of course, looking right when crossing the street instead of left. In fact, not only do they drive on the left side of the road, they also walk on the left side of the sidewalk or staircase.

Monday and Tuesday:

My friend Ellie and I woke up early to travel 4 hours by train to Edinburgh, Scotland. We started out the trip by visiting Arthur's Seat, an 822 foot climb above the city. It had beautiful views of the city and was definitely worth the pain and wind. After, we made a quick visit to Edinburgh Castle, which we could not tour due to the very windy weather. Other exciting sites we visited included the Elephant House Cafe, the cafe where J. K. Rowling began writing Harry Potter, and the Holyrood Palace, the stunning residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

Wednesday:

Every Wednesday from 2pm to 3pm, all of the international students learn about a different part of British Life. This week we learned about the holidays and events native to the U.K.

Thursday and Friday:

I finally started class. These days of the week i have lectures and seminars for my literature class, which counts towards my literature requirement for Susquehanna University. So far, this class seems as though it will be pretty easy. :)

On Saturday and Sunday, I visited the grand city of London with five of my friends. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Our trains were delayed on Saturday, so we arrived in London later than we wanted to. Despite this setback, and a few others, we got to visit many landmarks including Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, Princess Diana's memorial fountain, the Marble Arch, and Buckingham Palace.

It has been a great week and I am very excited to see what exciting things are in store for this week! :)

Cheers!

Michaela
